Sir William Herries, Minister of Customs, Mkrine, Labour, and Native Affairs, has gone to Auckland. The Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister of Internal Affairs, went to Featherston yesterday to make an inspection of soldiers’ graves. Tire Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister of Health and Education, is expected to return to-day from Auckland. * Sir R. Heaton Rhodes Minister of Defence, returned to Wellington from the South Island yesterday. The Hon. W. Ncsworthy, Minister of Agriculture, will leave this evening for Nelson. He will visit the Nelson fruit districts, and will attend the wheatgrowers’ conference in Christchurch on January 19. The seat rendered vacant on the New Zealand University Senate by the death of the Hon. J. A. Tole, K.C., who from I<K>3 to the date of his death represented Auckland University College, has been filled by the election of Professor A. 1. W. Thomas, former professor of botany at Auckland. Messrs. Dalgety and Company, Limited, have reccvied cable advice from their London office of the appointment of the Hon. Sir Herbert Alexander Lawrence. K C. 8.. managing partner of Messrs. Glyn, Mills, Currie, and Company, as a director on the London board of Dalgety and Company. Mr. Dunbar'Sloane, of Johnsonville, has been called to Auckland on account of the serious illness of his mothei - . Mr. A. Yates, senior clerk of the Telegraph Department av Napier, has retired on superannuation, after forty years service with the Department. Mr. Abbey Jones, editor of the Southland “Daily News,” who was a delegate to the recent Press Conference in Canada, returned to Wellington by the lofua from San Francisco yesterday morning. He was accompanied by Mrs. Jones. Sergeant C. W. Lopdell, of the Taranaki Street police station, who is being transferred to Te Kuiti, is one of tho most efficient and popular non-commis-sioned officers in the New Zealand Police Force. Sergeant Lopdell joined the force as a cons:able at Wellington about twenty years ago, being stationed at Mount Cook. He was subsequently appointed to carry out’photographic work in Dunedin for the Finger-print Department, and, following thesp duikes, he had charge of the Balclutha station for five years. He was later stationed at Queenstown and New Brighton, and some five years ago received promotion to Christchurch with fhe rank of sergeant. During the past three years Sergeant Lopdell lias been stationed at Taranaki Street, and his ability has earned for him the distinction of representing the uniform branch on the executive of ■ the policy branch of the Public Ser- I vice Association since its inauguration, I as well as a similar position in the investigations of the Committee of Inquiry through New' Zealand early in 1919. The sudden death has occurred at' Hamilton of Mr. B. H. Young, who. for many years, was connected with the Public Works Department, and carried out many undertakings, especially in the , M'Kenzie country. He was born in I Edinburgh 76 years ago. and subsequently ■ went in for farming in South Africa. , When war was declared between the ; Zulu and tho Boers, Mr. Young fought on the side of the Boers, and for his services was granted a block of land. He, I however, did not occupy the land him- | self, but went further afield —to Austra- ; lia. and then on to New Zealand, where ! he joined the Public Service. After retiring. Mr. Young spent some years ar l Little River, Canterbury, in farming pur- j suits, and later went to Hamilton to re- i side. Mr. Young leaves a widow, four sons,' and three daughters—Mrs. B. C. Jones. Mrs. Harold Earle (Christchurch), Mrs. J. Preston (Palmerston South), Mr. ]{. A. Young, M.C. (Naseby), Messrs. R. G. Yonng (Mount Cook), L. Young (Cambridge), and K. Young (Hamilton).
