Hatch, G. Snaddon (s.). It will be seen from the above that the Wellington Club, with fourteen rinks, had the biggest-individual club entry. The Opening Ceremony, Only those bowlers who were engaged on the Wellington Club’s green were able to be present at the opening ceremony. These were the bowlers concerned in A and N - sections. Players’ - in the other fourteen sections were disposed to the. four corners of tho compass, from Johnsonville to the north to Seatoun, Island Bay, and Lyall Bay to the south, and had to be early astir. Bowlers, for example, who had to play at Eastbourne had to catch tho 7.35 a.m. ferry boat from town. No other summer fecreation makes such early morning demands as a bowling tournament with every green employed. Promptly at 9 a.m. the president of the DominTun'-Centre (Mr. T.-Bush) mounted the steps of the Wellington Club’s pavilion and declared the tournament open. The Mayor of Wellington (Mr. J. P. Luke) said he had not been much of a bowler, and thought that no man could be a good player unless he was consistent and enthusiastic even to the making of sacrifices for it. He took leave to congratulate' the Wellington Club on the splendid memorial “peace gates” it had erected to the memory of bowlers who had fallen in the Great War. It showed a deep regard and kindly sympathy to erect so splendid a memorial to tho dear ones who had passed away. The president (Mr. Bush) reminded players of certain departures from th“ usual in tho programme. The Tournament Committee had made some of the rules a little more drastic than they had been, in the past, and he hoped players would* do till in their power t-o assist the committee. One of the alterations referred to the one-foot-on-the-mat rule, which it 'was proposed to enforce, and tho other was a reminder to players to use the "bank” rather than stand about on the green before and after they had delivered their bowls. The greens were in for a lot of hard wear during the next three weeks, and standing about on the greens did not tend to improve then! Tho committee when they lost Mr. J. J. Roberts as secretary thought they would never get a man to replace him, but he wished to say that in Mr. Sydney 11. Underwood they had found a very worthy successor’. He then called on his daugh-ter-in-law, Mrs. Charles Bush, to throw up tho jack, and amidst applause declared the tournament of 1921 open. Although it had been made known far and "wide that bowls could not be played unless stamped with the “D.8.A.” stamp (from 1913 to date), the umpires on several of .the greens discovered m,any such bowls. In one case the bowls of both skips in one game were found at fault, and the tester (Mr. Murray) had to get to work at once. He "was located at headquarters (the Wellington Club), and during the day several pairs of 1 bonds from other 'greens arrived for testing. Only two games a day (of 25 heads) will be played up to and including Thursday next. After eight games have been played, those who continue play will be section winners, and all rinks in any section which win the same number of games as may be won by any section winner, or ,any rink tying for any section, provided that no section is to be won with less than six wins. Ties are to be played off,' under conditions to he decided on by the Tournament Coramittee. After conclusion of section play the full two-life system is to be applied to all tqarns left in. Each team, when it has been beaten twice, drops out of the competition. Priority of byes at any stage is to be given to rinks which score the greatest number of wins during the play o-f the rink tournament, 'but no team is to have more than one bye unless unavoidable. The champion pairs, which are to be played at the conclusion of the rink play, will be played on the sectional system, each player being guaranteed five games. At the end of sectional play section ties are to be played off. If there ore only two ties, the game to be 21 heads:'but if more than two, the game to be I 9 heads. Section winners to be played on the “sudden-death” principle. Twenty-one heads to be played. Priority of byes required in the first roupd of finals is to be given to pairs which score, the greatest number of wins in section play. FIRST ROUND. SECTION A (WELLINGTON GREEN).
