“PORTABLE” RESIDENCES
EDUCATION BOARD’S SCHEME. As far as can be ascertained, the “portable house” system, anticipated to lie a solution of the many difficulties expeneuced by country .school teachers in obtaining accommodation, has not yet been'' put into operation. The Wellington Education Board resolved to recommend the scheme at a meeting held about three months ago, when the suggestion of the “portable house” followed a length},- discussion on the merits of the central lodging house schema, whereby it was thought teachers could bo accommodated in a house placed within a reasonable distance of several schools. It is understood that the Education Board has formulated a plan in regard to the scheme, and details of the houses proposed have been drawn up. “The position with regard to country school teachers is very difficult.” remarked an official to a Dominion reporter yesterday, “as sometimes single teachers are appointed to a school with a teacher’s residence, and do not wish to live there. . and often there is difficulty in finding accommodation for them with near-by settlers.” It is stated that the matter'of the "portable” homes i« receiving every consideration by the Department.
