EASTBOURNE AFFAIRS
MEETING OP THE COUNCIL. Tho monthly meeting of tho East--1 bourne Borough Council was held in the I Council Chambers, Eastbourne, on Friday. In tho absence of the Mayor (Mr. H. Mather), who is on a visit to Australia, the Deputy-Mayor (Mr. H. W. Shortt) presided. A letfer was received from the Department of Public Health calling attention to the Public Health Act, 1920, under which it will be necessary for local bodies to appoint sanitary inspectors. It was resolved to take advantage of the offer of the Public Health Department to supply an inspector. It was resolved to hold n special meeting on January 21 for the purposo of deciding the statutory lialf-holidny for the district, Accounts were passed for payment as under;— District fund account, ,£348 7s. Sd.J.ferrv service account, .£<>BB ss. 4d. The Finance Committee's recommendation that half of the general rate of tho following clubs bo remitted, was adopted: Muritai Tennis Club. Rohn Bav Tennis Club. Eastbourne Bowling Club. AVhcn tho revaluation of the borough took placo, the Presbyterian Church authorities, through an oversight, did not lodse any objection to the valuation of tho church property, and the Finance Committee's rocommeirftaifion I hat theso rates be remitted was adopted. Tho AA'orks Committee rccommcnded that the road in Totara Street be cut bnek nnd sufficient batter formed to enable a water channel to be constructed on the hillside from tho top to tho bottom of Totara Street and thence to the sea. and thnt a consulting engineer bo employed to supervise this work. After some discussion it was resolved that this recommendation bo adopted. The recommendation by the Works Committee thnt a footpath be formed in Marine Parade, from tho coalyard to Rata Strcot, was adopted, tho work to be nut in hand in January. The Dy-h>ws Committee reported* thnt n license had been granted to Mr. R. F. Savage to uso the Eastbourne Hall as a picture theatre, after various alterations l>ad been carricd out in order to make this hall comply with the by-laws. It was reported to the mcetini: that tlicrc'appeared to have been two breaches of the building by-law, 1915, which required n minimum of 40 feet to nil new subdivisions. Tho Town Clerk was instrucled to investigate the eases and Tefcr the matter to tho council's solicitor.
