ENGLISHMEN AT NAPIER. By Telegraph—Press ABsoclßtnn. Napier, August 1. A League football match, England v. Norlh Island, was played hero to-day, in pcrfttst weather, before. COOO speclators. The exhibition given by the Englishmen was hardly up to expectations, although clever work was at times evident, and the North Island team was outclassed. Tiro teams were ns follow;— England: Pull-back, E. threequarters, W. Stone, 13. Hurcombe, and ,T. ilacon; half'backs, Parkin anil E. AY. Jones (captain); forwards, J Cartwright, AV. Cunlitt'e, G. AY. AV. Cunliffe, G. A. Skilhorn, H. Gronow, 11. Hilton, aud I). Clark. North: Full-back, E. Gray; threequarters, 11. Loveridge, C. M'Carthy (captain), and E. AYoolley; five-eighths, J. Foster and P. Exeter; halt-back, M. Pollock; forwards, P. Burrows, J. Bennett, H. Priiig, E. Herring, E. Downing, and J. Scott. In the first spell North Island succeeded in smothering the attempts of tho Englishmen to open up the game, tlio score being only 13 to 2 against them. Tho Bccond spell was practically olio succession of scoring, the Englishmen running their score up to l(i, and North Island gaining one try. The large score was due to the manner in which tho ball was thrown about by the English backs, who were too speedy for their opponents. Trios were ncored by S'ono (3), Hurcombe (2), Skilhorii (2), Bacon, Parkin, and Clark (one each). Gronow converted eight. Downing scored for North Island, Gray kicking a penalty. Mr. G. Prater was tho referee.
