THE "KINK" FAMILY
SOME PECULIAR OBSESSIONS. Mental instability reveals itself in curious ways, as is shown by tho crank who feels some peculiar satisfaction in breaking windows in tho business part of tho city. It is probable that damago amounting to over ,21000 has been done within the past two months by the window-breaker. Plate-glass is very ex-pensive-Ms. per eqiuaro foot—so that when a largo show window is broken— as in the case of the National Cash Register Company, of Lower Cuba Streetbang goep .£4fl or .£SO in one throw. Most of tho business people with show IvVndows cn tho maiji thoroughfares havft insured them against breakage from any cause, and, strangely enough, many were induced to do so through the action of another crank, whose habit was to scratch windows with a diamond or glass-cutter of «>me kind. Another crank—perhaps guite as ridiculous if not so destructive—was the person who of an evening was given to tho practice of breaking the glass of firo alarms and ringing the bell. So constituted was this particular person that it became almost a nightly oconrrence, so a trap was set and the> man was caught, lie proved to bo quite n decent citizen in every way, but could not explain' the motive he had in ringing the alarms. He was fined a fairly substantial sum. and the nuisance abated. It is not so long ago since young ladies with their hair hanging "down their backs had to keep a strict guard on their locks. Many a girl went out of an evening, with her hnir most attractively displayed, and returned homo sobbing and plait-less. The perpetrator was so "slim" that he was never discovered. Still another member of the ICink family was tho person who was given to mixing in crowds with a bottle of ink, which was liberally used on the most gorgeous and costly of evening creations. Although it was suspected that the culprit in this case was a woman, it was never definitely proved.
