ASSAULT ON A CONSTABLE
Sir,—Your sub-leader in this morning's Dominion' apropos the trifling fine inflicted for what the Magistrate himself ia reported as having tcnucd a "serious assault," was well timed, and should commend itself to all decent members of the State. You might well have contrasted this sentence with that of 18 hours' imprisonment for begging dealt out by the same Magistrate at the same eibtiuff! Magistrates should, in my opinion, leave no doubt in the minds of the public and the police as to their determination to suppress tliis assaulting by sharp terms of imprisonment. You comment on. the apathy of tho crowd in not rendering any assistance. Does not the ridiculous sentence of this lenient Magistrate tend to prevent onlookers from giving any help—for they would apparently receive but slight encouragement from tho Bench in the not unlikely eveut of being thomselveg injured. I would congratulate you on. drawing such marked attention to a glaring case of mistaken leniency.—l am., etc., JUSTICE OF THE PEACE.
