SOCIAL AND PERSONAL A Masterton exchange announces the engagement of Dr. Norman 11. Prior, of Masterton, to Miss Jessie Miller,■ daughter of Sergeant N. Miller and Mrs. Miller, of Masterton. The fortnightly meeting of the Wellington South Nursing Division was held in the Newtown Library on Tuesday evening. Bedside work was demonstrated by. Mrs. Preston and Mrs. Barltrop, and the making of beds practised by members. Mrs. Holene Cross'returned to Christchurch on Tuesday from a visit to Wellington. , Advice, lias been received in Christ-, chiircfi of the marriage in Jerusalem of Mr. Gladstone Ward, third son of Sir Joseph and Lady Ward, to Miss Sophie llarb, of Jerusalem, states a southern exchange. Miss Dorothy Brunton is returning to Australia under engagement' to J. C. Williamson,, Ltd. She returns to play the lead in "Baby Bunting," in which musical play she made an impression in London. Mr. Harry Hilliaru has also been engaged in London *io figure in the same bill.

At a meeting of the Mothers' Help Di' vision (W.N.R.) a subcommittee was arranged to accept tho invita'.ion from tho Royal New Zealand • Society for the. Health of Women and Children to explain the work of the division. This was following on the suggestion made at the Plunkot conference that in districts where there was no branch of the Women's National Reserve, tho Plunkefc Society should'form'some scheme to carry on similar work, and thus benefit tho mothers in another necessary direction. It was announced that a fourth helper had been engaged for work in Wellington, and was already .fully occupied. An appeal is made for clothing for tlia Rest Room of the work, as tho garments which are given, being re-mado, do not stand' much hard wear. Mrs. Lee-Cowie (Dunedin) has been laid up with an attack of bronchitis sinco nor arrival in England. In the middle of this month Mrs. Lee-Cowie is going to Scotland to take part in that country .3 first local option battle. In .the nutuma she hopes to leavo on her return to New Zealand. The St. Vincent do Paul Society liaa received a letter from Sister Ratcliffe, matron in charge at Somes Island, acknowledging receipt of a parcel ot toya for- the children from the Maliana, which were much appreciated. ' Miss Coad, M.A., will give the first of the talks on "Citizenship" which have been arranged for the next two months by the Y.W.C.A. Educational Committee. Her subject will be "Women and tho .Vote," and all interested are mvitcd to attend this'lecture at the Y.W.UA,, Herbert Street, to-night at 8 oclock. Tho annual ball of :the Post and Telegraph Department is to take place this evening. The wedding took place in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Wanganw, lust week of Miss F. Mac Donald, second daughter of .Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Mac Donald, of, Wanganni, to Mr. P. Bowers, third son of Mr, and Mrs. J. Bowers, or Nelson. Miss Helen Akers returned to Palmerston North last week, accompanied by Miss MacShane. Wellington Nursing Division. At the meeting of the Wellington Nursing Division, St. John Ambulance Brigade Overseas, held this Veek, the members and others interested in tho work Were fortunate in hearing a. most interesting lecture by Dr. G. W. Harty,. on "The Conservation of ilu; subiect. was a new cue to the students, ana was listened to .with keen attention, uio' doctor touched on the formation of tho eye, different kiuds of sight,. diseases of the eye, various accidents likely to happei> to the same, and the • treatment to Ue given in trivial cases, or until the arrival of a medical man. The lecturer spoke very seriously of tho mistake of using the eyesight of, young children too much before seven years of ago by sending them to school too soon. Ihe doctor answered many questions at the conclusion of his lecture, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
