Sir Eonald Munro-Eerguson, GovernorGeneral of Australia, accompanied by Lady Helen Munro-Eerguson, intends to pay a visit to New Zealand. and will )>o in Auckland for a day' or two towards tho end of next month.
Professors Sommerville and Adamson, of Victoria College, last night, requested (he College Council to grant them leave of absence during the iW-t term of 1921. Both professors wrote that they desired to visit England, 'i'ho council acceded to their request.
The Mayor (Mr. .T. V. Luke), at the City Council meeting last evening, accorded to Councillor C. B. Norwood a warm welcome back to the council table, on his return from America and Eurcpe. Councillor Norwood had enjoyed a very happy trip, he was sure, which, would not only broaden his views, but should he of immense benefit to the city through, his municipal activities. Councillor Norwood thanked the Mayor and council for their welcome.
News was received in Wellington yesterday of the death of Mr. William C. Dawes, formerly chairman of the London Board of the' New Zealand Shipping Company, and tlie "New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. _ The deceased was n son of the late Sir Edwyn Dawes, who was chairman of the New Zealand Shipping Company for some years, .succeeding his father in that position. Last year he resigned the chairmanship in favour of Mr. Allan Hughes, but retained a scat on the board of directors up to the time of bis death. Several Years previously he resigned the chairmanship of the" New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Anency Company, and was succeeded bv Mv. Warrington Laing, who recently visited the Dominion. Mr. Dawes'remained a director of that company until Ws decensc. He paid a visit to New Zealand twelve pr thirteen years ago. Fnr pome time past he )iad been in indifferent health. The flags over the offices of the New Zealand Shipping Company and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agencv Company in Wellington were at half-mast yesterday as ft mark of respect, and theliouse Hag on the steamer Paparoa, now in port, was also half-masted.
The Legislate Council yesterday granted the Hon. M. Cohen fourteen days' leave of absence on account of urgent private business.
Mr. H. Wcstgnte, manager of the Empress Theatre, lias heen transferred to Wanganui as manager of His Majesty's Theatre. Mr. West-gate has been succeed: ed in Wellington by Mr. Uert. Tate, late of the Allan Wilkio Company.
Mr. G. H. Frank, for somo time chief clerk and acting postmaster at Danncvirke, has been appointed postmaster at Mctkven.
Mr. W. MTCinnon, at present relieving postmaster at Dunedin, has lieen nppointed postmaster at Dannevirke.
The Rev. B. D. PatcWett. of St. John's Methodist Church, Nelson, has ■ been invited to the East Belt Methodist Chiurch, Christchurch, and will be leaving Nelson next, April. Tha Rev. 11. L. Blainiros, of' Wangnmii. has accepted an invitation to St. John's, Nelson. Tine Rev. Percy R. Paris, of Auckland, has accepted au invitation to the Sydenham Methodist Church. All those appointments arc subject to confirmation OiT'the New Zealanl Conference, which nicets in Wellington about the beginning of March, 1921.
An old colonist, Mr. William Smith, died on Tuesday nt Auckland, at the age of 83. Mr. Smith, wlio arrived in Dunediu in 1857, spent somo years goldmnmig in Otago, and wis at Gabriel's Gully. Subsequently he went to tho West Coast,, and in ISG3 arrived in Auckland. Ho beenme a building contractor, and, with his partner, the late Mr. A. Sutherland, constructed' some of the wooden wlmrvcs at Auckland and Oncliungn. With his brothers, tho late Mr. Smith also constructed the Thames water-race.
Mr. .T Glover was granted extended leave of absence at yesterday's meeting, of the Hospital and ChantaWe Aid, Board in order to enable him to visit England. While in the Old Country Mr.. Glover will, at the instance of ttte board visit some of tho larger hospitals and kindred institutions.

Mr G. P. Brown, formerly editor and manager of the Levin "Daily Chronicle, has been appointed editor and manager of tho "Samoa Times." Ho. will leave Wellington by to-day's, Auckland express en vouto to Apia.

The annual report cf tho .Tohnsonville Bowling Club exposes regret at Ilia deaths of two members of tiro club, viz., Mr. John Rod and Dr. Saunders. Tho former had been a director and an enthusiastic bowler until failing health pre raited him from playing, .and the latter had been a member for several years, but had not been able to take an active part in the games.
