James Phillip Hooper was charged at the Magistrate s Court with having committed forgery by altering a W.F.C.A. receipt to read SSI 9s. sd. instead of .£1 9s. sd. Hooper wns recently committed to the Supremo Court for trial on n charge of obtaining goods by false pretences from tho W.P.C.A., Masterton. Tho ovidence showed that a stamp had been wrongly affixed to the receipt by one of tho W.F.C.A. employees. Tho charge was dismissed on the submission by Mr. T. Jordan that there wns no evidence to show that flic receint was altered with tho intention of defrauding the W.F.C.A. Tho alteration had been made in order to deceive accused's wife, and that did not render accused cuiity of a crime.
