PRICE OF BUTTER

AID FOR LOCAL CONSUMERS. ' The Prime Minister made a statement in tho House of Representatives yesterday regarding th* retail price or putter. Repi'.ying to a question asked by Mr. Mitchell (Wellington South), he said that tho Imperial Government had been taking New Zealand's exportable surplus of butter at 181s. per cwt., f.0.b., and the New Zealand Government had been paying a subsidy of twopence per pound on butter sold localfy in order to enable the present local price to be maintained without loss to the produoers. ' The cost of this paymont for tho "present year would be not less than ,£200,000, the local consumption of butter having shown a considerable increase.

" Tho price of butter in England, continued Mr. Mu-ssey, would be higher for next season's output, but the exact figure was not 'known yet. It cost about 9Jd. per pound to put New Zealand butter in tho hands of tlio British oonsumor. When the Government knew what Now Zealand butter was going to bring in England next season, it would consider the position here. Ho hoped that tho Government would bo able to continue Biasing butter available to the consumer at a reasonable nrica without doing any injustice to the producer.
