LOCAL BODY -ASKS SUBSIDIES.
An. appeal for government subsidies for tho. building of three bridges on tho r .mam-road.over the Eimutaka saddle was •:!.-;mado to tho Minister of Public Works by a deputation from the Hutt County Council yesterday. The bridges rewired were one over the Pakuratahi Eivor to cost .Mm, a bridge and a deviation at btokes Valley, to cost in all jam. and a small bridge on tho Eimutaka Eoad, to -cost im It was represented :■.,:■ uuu much of the country adjacent to these works was of such poor quality ~.tnat the rates from if-scarcely paid the -■• wage, of the road man, and that the country could not ■ afford to find tho money to do them without aid from tho and thon only if, an arrangement could be made with other , -..local bodies to pay a proportion of tno cost, as had been done for the works on tho other side of the range. Tho county representatives expressed the opinion thac it would be possible to come to sucn an arrangement by consent, but if not a commission would have to bo set up to . ftpportionato tho cosft Tho Minister said that he would get a report from the District Engineer on tho works. Ho would find out, also, what arrangement had been made about sinujW, on tno otner si(le °f the hill and this would no doubt be a guide as to procedure on this side. As soon as he had the reports lie would be glad to let tho county.council know what could be done. He also promised to visit the • locality as soon as ho could do so.
