Hiss Saunders, who was employed as a housemaid at Mr. W. 1). Hunt's residence, Kelburn, was crossing Liimbton Quay at 10.35 p.m., opposite Kelburn Avenue, when she was run down by a motor-car driven by Mr. T. C. A. Hislop. It appears that Miss Saunders was going to jdm a friend on the Kelburn side of and she had traversed three-quarters of the distance when Mr. Hislops car approached her from tho Willis.Street corner. The deceased apparently did not see the car until it was close to her. Then sho hesitated and made as if to cross in front of it. She again hesitated awl stepped back. Jlr. Hislop swerved his car to one side and then to fno other, endeavouring without avail to avoid Miss Saunders, who was struck by the front of tho car and knocked down. Miss Saunders was_ immediately packed up and found to bo suffering from very severe injuries to her head. Sho was taken to the Bowen Street Hospital in an unconscious state. and after admission'was examined by Dr. Herbert. The doctor pronounced life to bo extinct, Miss Saunders apparently having died on the way to the institution. A particularly sad feature of the fatality was that Miss Saunders's companion—who was waiting for her on the other side of the quay—saw the accident, but was ignorant of the fact that it was her friend who had been struck down. She went home and did not hear of Miss Saunders's death, till a late hour. ' - A sister of the deceased, .Mrs. Knox, resides at Hataitai.
