MAXIMUM GROWTH OF INSIGNIS PINE
Sir,—He Mr. Praise's recent statement, in your issue of ,Tune 19, the following, letter has interest. It shows that JO. Prouse's statement, both as regards timber cut and the area on which it grew is an estimate which requires verification.—l am, etc., D. E. HUTCHINB. (Enclosure.) Sir David Hutching. Dear Sir—ln teply to yours of the 24th instant, ro pinus insiguis, the details whictu you have stated in your letter are as stated by me to .Air. J. Prouse. and you aro quite right in assuming that the trees were growing in lines. The method wo adopted in measuring the area was stepping off n/sufficient number of paces to cover a quarter of an acre and conntine the trees within this area. Wc then estimated that the trees would average well over 1000 superficial feet of sawn timber each. As you say, it is very difficult to get tin accurate estimate, when the treas aro growing under thess conditions, of what the yield would bo under forest conditions,—Tours faithfully, (Sgd.) H. Valder, Manning Direotor, Ellis and Burnand, Hamilton.
