TIMBER WORKERS'

ANNUAL CONFERENCE. The annual conference of the New Zealand Timber Workers' Federation sat throughout yesterday. The delegates present were—Messrs. TO Byrne (boutiy land); V. Turley, and B. Topp (Westland)! H. Hunter (Canterbury); J. Keed and W. Donaldson (Wellington); and E. Phelan (Auckland). Mr. E. Phelan was elected president, and Mr. H. Hunter re-elected secretary for the ensuing twelve months. After a discussion on the question of organising tho country districts, the following motion was adopted:—"That the Wellington Timber Workers' Union be requested to organise the Wellington industrial district, towns and country, and that the federation wish them every success and agree to render all possible assistance." The annual report, covering the activities of tho federation during the year, and tho balance-sheet, showing the finances to bo in a satisfactory condition, were adopted, and a vote of thanks was passed to tho officers for their services. Tho following resolutions from Westland were adopted:—"That prior to tho inspection of sawmills and accommodation, the secretary of the organisation controlling tho industry which it is proposed to inspect, shall be notified of such inspection and shall have the right to accompauy the inspector." "Where abandoned sawmill areas are opened up for rokieitiou by the Government, timber workers with families residing in tho district Bliall be givon preference in securing a holding in such areas." "That in futuro copies of reports made by inspectors under the Labour Department regarding accommodation ho supplied!to the union secretary." During the afternoon Messrs. Ellis and' Phillips-Turner, of tho Forestry Department, visited the conference and discussed matters of interest to tho Department and tho timber workers.
