TEE WELLINGTON CLUB. The Wellington Chess Club has received fourteen entries for the annual rhamnionship tourney.' viz., Messrs. B. J. Barnes (present champion). W. E. Mason (New Zealand champion), W. Mockny. A. W. Gyle.?, S. Gyles. Fouhy. Puro.has. Lee, G. P.' Anderson, Godtschalk, . Fnnll;nor, M'Nair, Jcssup, Wl Kelling. Tho first round was scheduled for Saturday evenin", when wins were scored by Messrs. A.. W. Gvles and G. P. Anderson. The other five games are outstanding.. The club has also received fourteen entries for the annual handicap tourney to decide possession of the "Petheriek' trophv and other prizes. There is a probability that the Otago v. Wellington telegraphic match will be abandoned, m. the event of the southern club being?unable to secure the ime of The recent Otaso v. Canterbury match was played- without clocks, but the experiment was not a. happy one, only six games having been completed, while'no fewer than nine lire marked incomplete, and have been rent to tho New Zealand Adjudication Board. The local players are in no mood to waste either time or money in this way. WORKING MEN'S CLUB. This club opened its cliess season recently with a match in which two dozen members took part. Sides were chosen by tho captain (E. J. Barnes) and vicecaptain (F. K. Kelling). The former's team is at present leading by one game (6—5). and tho result of the match consequently depends on the outstanding fixture between Messrs. Whitehead and H. Douglas. Th club's annual handicap tourneys have been .commenced, there baiuß sixteen entries for chess and ten for draughts. NGAIO CHESS CLUB. Seven rounds have been contested in this club's 'current handicap tourney. Mr. F. J. Brooker, tho president, is leading with the good tally of 5 wins 1 draw, and 1 loss (51—1}). U; Topp, 31-21. B, W. Stevens, 3-1 j W. J. Carman, 21-}; E. A. Hicks, 2-2; W. J. Hicks and R. Hanger each I—l. The other five competitors have so far won less than half their games. Mr. G. A. Jones, the club cliainpiou, is not taking part in the contest. The club proposes to hold a lightning tourney at an early date. LASKER RESIGNS WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP. (Bee. Juno 27, 5.5 p.m.) Amsterdam, June 2G. Lasker has resigned the world's cliam•pionship to G'apabliiuca, on Hie ground that the chess world does not approve of the terms of tho proposed match between Lasker and Capiiblanea.—Aus.-N.Z.
