ROYALTY HOAXED
Several residents of the.Spalding district of Lincolnshire have been hoaxed by announcements purporting to emanate from Buckingham Palaco and to be signed by His Majesty's private secretary conferring honours upon them. This recalls recollection to one occasion at least of the conferring of an honour as the result of a successful hoax, Royalty itself being tho victim. In the reign of 'Georgo IV, a Dublin medical doctor wrote ' a book. He had a copy splendidly bound for presentation, and then went to London to tho Royal Levee, where he handed a card to the Lord in Waiting,'on which his name appeared as attending to present his work on a, certain professional subject and "to receive the honour of knighthood." Tho Lord in Waiting thought that all was right, tho King thought so.ioo. The Dublin doctor knelt down, tho King took a sword, gave him the (flap of dignity, and bade him "arise Sir Thomas." After tho Levee, and when tho newspapers had published tho knighthood as one of the incidents of tho day, there were some inquiries about tlio recipient of the distinction. Who had recommended lrim? Of what Minister was ho tho protege? But they were all too late-the knigihthood had been conferred, and peoplo could only l&ugh.Can-. ning was reported to have said that"- he supposed this doctor claimed the honour "by prescription."
