DAVIS CUP CONTEST
v PREPARATIONS IN AUCKLAND. ■ ' . ,By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, June 25. Matters connected with the Davis Cup competitions, .which are expected, to be held nr Auckland in December, was discussed by the Auckland Provincial Lawn Tennis Association. The. chairman (Mr. Ohlson) reported that,' though it had been agreed by the New Zealand and Australian Lawn..Tennis Associations that the competitions should take place in Auckland, the local association had been unable to obtain authority from tho New Zealand' Association to make necessary-arrangements for the tournament. The consent of the City Council had .been obtained to use-a portion of the Domain 1 for the 'competition, A complete tennis court would have to bo prepared, and suitable buildings erected, and it was imperative that an early start should bo made with the work. The municipal, authorities recognised that the competition was an important international event, and would render every possible assisance in.preparing the, ground. Ho had made repeated applications to the New Zealand Association for authority to commence the work, and had also communicated with the secretary of the Australian Association, explaining tho position. Probably tho delay was due to the fact that the challenging nation s approval of the venue of the match had to bo obtained, and that this was not yet forthcoming. Ho had requested the secretary ,to the Australian Association to oablo, the challengers to obtain their approval. ' Tho chairman also _ 6tated that' the New Zealand' Association desired to -have tho cup games completed by December 23, notwithstanding thai the Auckland Association had suggested that the games should be played -on December 28, 30, and 31. In his letter to the secretary of the Australian Association ho had strongly advised that the fixtures' should bo made on the dates suggested. After considerable discussion, it was decided thnt a oablcgram bo sent to the secretary of the Australian Association, requesting him to reply to the, chairman's letter, and that a meeting of the Auckland Association be held in a week's time to consider what further action bo taken.
