TAILORING TRADE DISPUTE
: " ■ UNION'S CLAIMS BEFORE ARBITRATION COURT. _ Br Teleeraoh—Press Association. Christchurcli, June 22. The Canterbury tailoring hade dispute was before the Arbitration Court to-day. The -union asked for 41 hours per week, and wages at the Tate of .05 per week for male workers,' and .£3 10s. for females, piece-workers toreceivo Is. Gd. and Is. 2d. per hour respectively. After'hearing the evidence. His Honour said that at New Plymouth evidence was given that under tho team system workers were able to earn 50 per cont. higher wages, and. to produce clothing at reasonable rates.
Mr. F. R. Cooke,.who appeared for the union's demands were agreed to. They their individuality and make;, slaves of the women. . His Honour: The women didn't look like slaves. They were strong, intelli-gent-looking women, who resisted interference with, the conditions under which th°v were working. Mr. F. Coop«r, for the employers, submitted that it would be disastrous if the union-? demands were agreed to. They represented as regards males an increase over pre-waf wages of 109 per cent., and in respect of .females 183 per cent. ■ The Court reserved its decision. ■
