MAORI LEGENDS
' ~—■ . A COSTUME RECITAL.' The costume recital of Miss MariedS Batten's poetical version of Maori love legends was repeated in tho Concert Chamber last njght before a large audience, 'which included the Countess of V Liverpool. This recital was a pronounced success when it was given first early in April, and it was no less enjoyabls 'last night. Three legends were present-, ed, that of Rau-Mahora and Takarangi ■ (Miss Knola Innes and Mr. Alfred; Spencer), Hinemoa. and TutanekaiV (Miss Lali Benbow and Mr. Erie Rishftovth), and Puta and Hauipia (Miss Linda M'lntyre a.nd Mr. Leonard Power). The' individual'performers were not without weaknesses, but they interpreted Misa Batten's poems with excellent spirit, and were assisted by good staging and appropriate dressing l . Miss Hardinge-Maltby,, who was responsible for the arrangement • and stage-management, provided introductions, and read tho author's dedication. During tho performance Mr. Rob- ■> ert Bell sang "Ka Mate" (To RiuigiiHiki- ? ron), a vocalised version of the haka of welcome, and also "Waiata Poi" (Alfred Hill). Fluto music in the Hinemoa legend was played by Mr. Claude Tucker, and Miss Jean Cooke was the accompanist,
