ENCOURAGING INQUIRIES FROM , - ABROAD.

• Palmeraton North, June 22, Commenting on the opinion of the chairroan of the National Dairy Association, that low-priced mutton might in future seriously affect the consumption of cheese in the Old Country, Mr. W. I). PonvlrelH at to-day's meeting of the .-.ssociAtion quoted inquiries holiad received for meat as chairman Qf' a' freezing company which went to dispel any fear of n big drop in prices for New Zealand meat. Mr. Powdrell stated that he lmd li.toly received an offer at a bettor price than that obtaining under the ccmmandeer for 50,000 tofis of-mutton. He had also received a much better offer than the Imperial Governments price from America, and a- boat hid been ready in Welding ton to take mutton, but the Imperial Government, would not sanction the sale. Recently, also, he had received a cablegram offering a better price than was tlien current for one class of beef.
Many people seemed to think, he added, that the bottom was going to drop out ct the country when the Imperial. Govern-ment-closed its buying. Personality, he thought otherwise. He had just quoted instances to show that there was no-fear
of- low prices for our meat affecting the consumption of cheese. Mr.,Powdrell also emphasised the necessity for seeing that the dairy producers got a fair sftiare of the shipping space when the freezing companies commenced to clear their stores of the present accumulation of meat. :
