THE PARALYSIS OF GOODWILL

Sir,—A glance at the cable news in your columns this morning is sufficient to 'show the extent to which the paralysis of good will, referredHo in your leading columns yesterday, exists in every land. It is too late, however, to appeal" to the Christian Church, as Mr. Lloyd George suggests, for it lias allowed its opportunity to lapse. The Church and the world are locked together in deadly embrace, (Sep'Kev. 11, 18-23.) Already, during the past five years; probably fifty millions have been slain by the 6word, pestilence, and famine, and the Christian nations have piled up ,£50,000,000,0(10 of war indebtedness.

Christendom has built its house upon Hie sand, and now the rain is descending . and the wind (of anarchy) is beating upon it. and modern thought, is awakening to the fact that with all its education and fine clothes it is in grave danger of dissolution. Battleships and admirals, armies, generals, and scoundrels, soaring wages, and the high cost of living, together with the scarcity of commodities and greed of money are simply pawns in the great drama, and the only possible reform is from within the individual. It is no uso trying to reform the other fellow. If good will is to come about, the' Golden Rule must be applied, and whether or not my neighbour is a profligate and fights, 6weurs, and drinks, or steals, gambles, breaks the Sabbath, and takes me down, these fillings must be avoided by me, for in due time they bring down the wrath of God upon the earth, nations and individuals indulging in them are brought down. Where arc the nations to-day? . Mr. Lloyd.George said."the churches alone could save the people from the disasters which would ensuo if anarchy of will and aim continue to spread." •Thaii they are spreading very rapidly, and that "dark clouds are looming on the industrial horizon" goes without saying; but it is useless to appeal to the churches.
