SUGGESTIONS 'FROM EDUCATION ■ ; :,; ./ ,: -COUNCIL.Tho Council'of Education decided on Thursday to mako tho following recommendations to the University Senate and tho Hoard'Of Studies with Teferonce to the matriculation .examination:—(a) "That tho present syllabus in ■ geo'graphy he curtailed and more carefully defined in order to, limit tho scope of the examiner." (b) "That the questions set in.'mathematics be arranged in such-manner that by answering the simpler compulsory questions, 'a pass in tho subject-'may ■'bo obtained." (c) "That candidates in drawing bo allowed to substitute shading-, and geometrical design for practical/, plain and solid geo-.metry.,".',.'(d);-""Tliat...the Senate _ bo urged-to 'insist on tho proper revision, ■of • examination' papers with a view to .'avoiding the-.setting .of problems _ incapable of solution, and also to avoiding confusing errors -in ' printing, such as have occurred in ; the past."
Members of.the council, in . the course of a. brief discussion; stated that soma grave mistakes had. been made in examination ''' papers." The -arithmetic paper at the last--matriculation examination' had contained two problems incapable of solution,, with- tho- - icsult that some candidates wasted time and possibly became confused. _ Tho Latin paper, had. contained a misprint, of a kind ■ likely to .perplex the candidates. A recent examination, paper in . geography had, been a>,.franied that n candidate with a good knowledge of South America'co.iild'pass : with flying colours, wliihv a'candidate with -a sound know-, ■ledge of Europe an<L'other countries, but lacking a- close acquaintance with\ South America, might fail to pass.The Director of Education (Dr. Anderson) it would be impossible to 'avoid- mistakes. • His Department 'had'been compelled moro.th'anorice to spend-'money on telegrams correcting an examination paper. .
