WAIRARAPA NOTES
At the conclusion of the meeting of the Featherston Borough Council on Wednesday Councillor Holms tendered his resignation by reason of continued illhealth as a councillor and Deputy-Mayor, an offico ihe has held for several years. The councillors paid a very high tribute to the administrative ability of Councillor ETolms, and to his unique record of public service generally, not only in Fentherston, but Wairarapa, and in some directions, the province. Councillor I l '. W. Smith wrfs elected as Deputy-Mayor, and Councillor M. H. Kendall resigning as treasurer, Councillor B. S. Yclvcrton was elected in his stead. Acting on medical advice, Mr. Holms will bo absent from Fentherston for at least a year. A public meeting is to be held in the Anzac Municipal Hall on Wednesday to consider (1) the district war memorial proposal; (2) future uses for the Anzac Hall; (3) formation of a progressive organisation. Masterton speakers have been invited to be present. The following resolution has been carped by tl'a Masterton West School Committee:—"That considering tho unsatisfactory condition of tho side school,'this committee requisitions the Education Board to attond to tho repair, of tho school so that the committee will not be embarrassed with the expense of necessary repairs, etc." A meeting of a joint committee of ladies and gontlemen is to bo held in Featherston to-night to make arrangements for the Farmers' Union social and danco to be held in the Anzac Hall, Featherston. on July 8. Mr. Pctrcy Cook, of the gas department at Invercargill, has been appointed accountant of Masterton Borough gas supply. , A num'bor of machine-guns captured from tl<e Germans aro to bo allocated to I various towns in the Wairarapa. Three of the guns have already bean received in Masterton, and it is hoped that other war trophies will be presented to the town. Tho Masterton We6t School Committee bus adopted a resolution expressing l regret at the suggestion of the Education Board to delay the enlargement cf tho West School pending tho election of the High School. Tho St. Matthew's Church authorities have let a contract for the erection of a now school in Poivnnll Street. Mastertoil. The building will bo mdy for lis® probably early next year.
