The engagement is announced of Miss Violet Bell, youngest daughter of the Hcnr' Sir Francis' 801 l and Lady Bell, Wollington, to Mr, J. G. Denniston, youngest son of the late the Hon. Sir John Denniston and Lady Denniston, Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. Eric Johnston, who have boon visiting Australia, returned by tho ilooraki yesrorday. At yesterday's annual meeting of the Mothers' Kelp Division of the Women's National Reserve Mrs. Coleridge, in moving a vote of thanks to all subscribers for their generous help towards the work of the division, said that the late Mr. James Macintosh was the first subscriber to its funds, and he had always eviuccd the keenest sympathy with tho movement, being thoroughly convinced that some such soheme of help for liiothers was urgently required. Mr. Luke, 111 commenting upon the division's work also said that the city had lost a good citizen when Mr. Macintosh died, and vaiious organisations a sympathetic and helpful friend, Miss Anderson, formerly of Wellington, has joined the Saanich branch of the Victorian Order, an organisation of nurses which is doingi splendid work m British Columbia. At present Miss Anderson and other nurses are coping with a widespread outbreak of influenza. Tho council of the Government Service Women's Federation of Australia lias decided to isk tho Commonwealth to appoint a board of women to determino the basic wage for women throughout the Commonwealth.

The death occurred lit Chmlchureh on Friday last of Miss Brownell, surviving daughter of the lato Dr. T. G. Brownell, Ilobart, Tasmania. 'Die deceased lady, who lyas in her 83rd year,had lived in Christchurch for many years. The marriage took placo at tho Basilica of Mips Vera Chalmers, eldest daughter of Mrs. A. M. Chalmers, of Wellington, to Mr. F. W. Qrayburn, of Gemldine. Tho Kov. Father Diguan performed the ceremony.

Dr.' and Mrs. Tosewill (Hastings) are leaving shortly 011 a visit to England.

The .marriage took place at Cheltenham. Feilding, on April H, of Miss Louisa Victoria Hurcomb, third daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ilurcomb, of Wellington, to Mr. Hobert Thow, only son of Mr. and Mrs. George Thow, of Cheltenhnra. Tho bride, who was given awa.v by her brother, Mr Arthur HurcomS, wore a grey tailored co9tumo, and carried a bouquet of white carnations, cos- ■ mere, and maidenhair fern. Miss Phyllis Dale was bridesmaid, and wore n frock of white muslin. Mr. Murray Mitchell acted as best'man. After the ceremony a reception was iielu at tho residence of Mr. and Mrs. George Thow. Later Mr. and Mrs. Hobort Thow left for Auckland.

Mrs. T. C. Dawson, of tho Lower Hutt, is staying at tho Empire Hotel.

Mrs. H. M. Woodward arrived from Hawera on Friday.

The Hon. Mrs. Taliu Rhodes (Christohuroli) went to 'Auckland to meet Captain Ehodes on his return from Fiji, whore he had gone in his capacity as the Governor-General's Military A.D.C., to meet the Prince of Wales.

A double' wedding took plaeo in tho Oust Presbyterian Church last week, states tho Christchurch Press, when the Misses Mary aiid Ellen M'Dowell, tho two eldest daughters of Mr. and Mrs. W. M'Dowell, of AVest Eyreton, were married respectively to Mr. Joseph Herman, youngest eon of Mrs. T. jtlarshall, West Eyreton, and Mr. ICenneth Hannam, youngest sou of Mr. and Mi'b. Hannam, of Wellington. Misa Mary M'Dowell was attended by her two sisters, tho Misses Jessie and Amy M'Dowell and Miss Ellen M'Dowell by the Misses Elsie M'Dowell and Mary Hannam. Mr. Joseph Berman was attended by his brother, Mr. George Bermiui, as best man, and Mr. Hannam by Mr.' J. M'Dowell, the bride's brother."

At the meeting of the Mothers' Help Division of the W.N.R., the committee passed" a vote of great appreciation of tho services of tho lion, secretary, Mrs. Alierne. Tho committee was of the opinion that it was largely duo to her' tact and good management that the Bchome of domestic help for mothers has met with'so much success. 'Mrs. Aherne represented tho division at the Dominion Conference held in New Plymouth a short time ago, and tho high order of her work has met with whole-licartefl appreciation.
