COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL

LIEUT.-COLONEL MITCHELL ENTERTAINED. In St. Thomas's Hall (Newtown) last evening, a complimentary social was tendered to Lieut.-Colonel 0. Mitchell, D.5.0., M.P., in honour of his return to Parliament as member for Wellington South. Mr. C. M. Luke pr?-idcd over a large attendance, and associated with him on the platform was Mr. AV. Then-, chairman of Mr. Mitchell's Brooklyn election committee. Lieut.-Colonel Mitchell was accompanied by Mrs. Mitchell. The gathering was marked by considerable enthusiasm. ' In a short address Mr. Luke said that for a gentleman to contest the scat in an electorate in which he was a comparative stranger, and win by such a big mnjorily, spoke volumes, and it was possible because of tho sterling calibre of Lieut.-Colonel Mitchell. The ehairmnn prophesied with every confidence that the colonel would make himself felt and heard in Parliament to distinct advantage and would do credit to his country, his electorate, and Mmself. For that reason Wellington South's choice had rightly fallen on Lieut.-Colonel Mitchell—a man whose downright earnestness appealed to .all. '(Applause.) Mr. Luke presented tho guest of the evening on behalf of his supporters with a cheque for a substantial anionnt in order to help defray his election expenses. Cheers were then spontaneously given for Lieut.-Colonel and Mrs. Mitchell, folIcwikl bv the refrain, "For Hc'6 a Jolly Good Follow." Fitting acknowledgment was made by Lieut.-Colonel Mitchell, who tendered to those present his warmest thanks.
