VICTORIA COLLEGE

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.

The Victoria College Council met last evening. There were present Messrs. C. Watson fin tho chair), 'I'. Forsyth, P. Levi. R. A. Wright, M.P., W. Morton, E. 0. Smith, J. C. Taylor, E. K. Lomas, F. W. Bakewell, Rev. W. A. Evans, and Professors Hunter and Somerville.

Tho Students' Debating Society wrote with regard,to the annual award for tho dobatiue competition which had been wou by C. Q. Pope. Mr. Pope, however, it had been found, was ineligible for the nrize under the rules governing the competition owing to the fact that lie was not a matriculated student. This regulation the society deemed was not in the best interests of the competition, and it asked that it be removed, so that the award to Mr. Pope might stand, , In tho course of a general discussion members, while sympathetic to the proDosal. were of the opinion that it should not 1)0 made retrospective. In any case, the rules of the competition had, it was nointed out. been drawn up by tho society itself. A. motion was carried declining to errant the request this year. It, was decided to pay the second instalment of tho Jacob Joseph Scholarshin to Mr. F. F. Wolter, he having comnlotcd his thesis to the satisfaction of t.ho Professorial Board. Tim Students' Association wrote, askiutr ihat an Order-iii-Council bo applied for. authorising a compulsory levy of 10s, (Id. per annum on nil students, the same to be handed over to the association for disbursement, subject to the direction or the Professorial Board. It was exnlained that tho object of the move was lo put the.linaces of tho association 01/ a sound footing, and tho lee would cover subscriptions to all clubs and societies run under the auspices of the association. A regulation similar to that desired obtained at the Otago University. It was decided to grant the request. Mr. Martin-Smith was appointed assist-ant-librarian.
