WELLINGTON'S STATION

MA\'OH MAKES A SUGGESTION. The Mayor o£ Wellington (Mr. .T. P. Luke. M.P.) has suggested to the Prime Minister that the Prince of Wales should be asked to lay the foundation-stone of the new railway station Uirinti his visit to Wellington. This nwiiige-.iieiit would provide an interesting meuorial of Hie visit and would at the same time convey to Wellington citizens some assurance Hint the erection of the new sution is not going to be delayed indefinitely. Mr. Luke's suggestion is made in the following letter, addressed to Mr. Massey:—"l would strongly urge the Government to make arrangements for the Prince of Wales, when in Wellington, to lay the foundation-stone of the proposed new railway station. Tf tho plans arc not sufficiently forward to plate the stone at, the entrance, it could he placed in an equally conspicuous position, namely, I ho south-western comer of what will bo. the. block pf buildings. lam sum you will agree with mo that there can he no difficulty in determining l tho actual alignn.eut'on Featherstou and Bunny Streets respectively, and tire tablet placed on stone in nositiou I have migwsted would be a reminder not only to the travelling public on the railway, but would he strikingly visible to people reaching the Ferry Wharf and shipping •■iiul general public on both main thoroughfares-. I sincerely trust that you will make the provision suggested, which will be an important and useful ceremony (hat tho Prince would be pleased to be identified with, and would be a lasting reminder of which I iim convinced is the wish of the oounlrv that His Royal Higiines? As visit Was associated with the laying of one of the most important public works that the city standi in need of."
