HIS PLEDGE
"I will make'this pledge to this mooting of citizens: That rather than hold office by the vote of any one of those men or of all of them I would walk off the Treasury benches without a moment'.-; notice. They will never get me in a position to dictate to r.ic. As long as I lead the Government, I will dictate its policy with tho advice of my colltugues, and when I find that I have not enough genuine' supporters to give mo a majority of the House I will vasito office. In makiiig this pledge I can speak for myself and my own party. I cannot epeak for the other people— ]am not in their confidence. Hero is tho position of tho parties in Parliament to-day:—The Reform Party has a strength of 11, tho Liberal Party is 31, the rest of the House is made up of tho official Labour Party and other Labour members and Independents. It is not possible for tho Literal Party to overtake us. We will still havo a majority over the Liberal Party, but if we don't get a majority of tho House and tile other people form an alliauco with the Parliamentary Latmr Party, tten God help Now Zealand!'"—Mr Massey, at Elthnin. , ■
