Mr. A. D. M'Leod, wlin is standing as Reform candidate l'ov Waintrapa, lias just retired from the chairmanship of tho I'eatherston County Council, to take his seat as an ordinary member again. lis lias been for 2-t years a member of tho council, and for sixteen years of that period ho lias been chairman. At the last meeting of the council the staff, in. eluding tlm outside men, presented Mr. M'Leod with a traveling rug, and for the stair Mr. G. W. Cobb, county clerk, expressed appreciation of the kindly courtesy of Mr. M'Leod in his dealings with the s'ervnnts of the county over a lonfl period of years. Mr. M'Leod entered public life very young, for he is not yet •'•0 years of age.
Mr. 11. B. Luskyof the teaching staff of Christ's College, has accepted a position at King's College, Auckland. Mr. Lusk is well known in cricket and golfing circles throughout the Dominion.
(In Saturday afternoon. 15 members of the Clear Meat Company's start met at l'etnne to present an illuminated address to Mr. W. K. Mi'.hvard, who is retiring from flip position of managing director after 30 years' service. The presentation was made by Mr. W. If. Tripe, the general manager, who voiced the very great regret they all felt at parting with Mr. Millward. They hoped that at the cxoi ration of the leave which his co-direc-tors had granted him that he would again lake a keen interest in the affairs of the company. Messrs. W. G. Lodder, E. C. Corner, and A. Carter, heads of department":, also spoke. Mr. Samuel Burridge, who recently handed over control of the fellmongery department, a position wliHi lie held for .11 years,_ camo from Taihape, where he has farming interests, io he present at the function. Mr. TTnxjli" Gillies,-of Palmerslon North, who retired from the position of buyer in 1316, and whose connection with the business dated back to the days of tho lata M>. .Tames Gear, was also present. Mr. Millward, who was considerably moved, in thanking the employees for their address a.nd their kindly remarks, traversed the development of the company since its formation in 18S2 to the present day, and pxpressed his Gratitude for tho grnat loyaltv lie had always received from them.' The address, which was beautifully designed and bound in morocco leather, was the work of Mr, W. R. Dock. On Saturday evening the buying staff and heads of departments were tho guests of Mr. and Mrs. Millward.
An arrival in Sydney by the Sonoma last week was Sir Walter Essex and his daughter. The English visitors are on tow. and .after a week in Sydney will come on to Ne*v Zealand, where they will spend some time. Sir Walter Essex was, up to tho last election, Liberal member in the House of Commons for Stafford. For manv years he has taken an active interest in municipal affairs, and was created a knight in 1910. His principal business concern is the wall-DTi-y printing industry. Lieutenant C. V. Fordham, fI.N V. 1 ?., of Wellington, is returning home hv nie steamer Bremen, which left Eng.and 10* eenily for Australia.
