[Published by Arrangement.—lteprinted from "Tho Times" (London) of July 23, 1919.1 PROHIBITION PROPAGANDA. (To tho Editor of "Tho Times.") Sir,—Many who have worked for years in connection with the various temperance societies view with concern and alarm tho coming prohibition propiiganda. for close upon 20 years 1 have sr/oken privately and publicly on behalf of ■ wlial: is known as the temperance cause, and during the last half of that time have Hatched with relief and hope the extraordinary change which has taken nlaco in (he drinking habits of the people of this country. With the higher standard of living and the greater economic indeccmk'iico of women—for it is the miserable and poverty-stricken woman who drinks, not the woman with a homo sho can be proud of—Great Britain is becoming n sober country by a process of natural development. .. To suggest prohibition at this juncture will. I believe, throw the true cause of teiniicrance back fifty years. It is a retrograde movement, and we cannot now easily tolerate methods of repri» sion in dealing with ethical questions. After three years of close and intimate contact with men and women engaged in lieavv manual labour I have learnt to believe that just as it would be cruel and unfair to deny a tired and exhausted woman her cup. of lea, ho it would be equally cruel and unfair to donv a man his glnsfi of beer. . . So detrimental will tho prohibitionist movement be, in my opinion. to the true interests of temperance I hat f find myself wondering whether "tho trade" lias had anything to do with importing "Pussyfoot'' into this country. Yours truly, HEATTU(.!!■! PICTON-TUIiiIEUVILL. Eantham, S. Devon, July 21.
