STATE PURCHASE and CONTROL The Very Latest News!! The New Zealand Moderate League has received the following cable from London, dated 2nd December, 1919. "At a meeting at Carlisle of Trades Unionists, Trades Councils, and the Labour Party, two hundred and fifty delegates being present, held on the eighth of November, Mr. J. H. Thomas, M.P., Secretary to the British Railway Federation, presiding, a resolution was unanimously passed affirming the desirability of State Purchase and Control of the Liquor Trade being continued and extended over the whole country." Sir Robert Allison: Who, until converted to State Ownership by the Carlisle Experiment, was a staunch prohibitionist . and supporter of the United Kingdom Alliance, speaking at Carlisle on August 28th, 1919, said "He wished the Drink Trade had been nationalised three years ago and that the example of Carlisle had been followed by all England." Ist, 1919— The Premier (Mr. Lloyd George) announced that a Bill was being prepared to continue Liquor Control. Speaking of prohibition he "thought it impossible to apply it to Britain." What is not good enough for Britain is not good enough for New Zealand— From N.Z. Press Cable appearing sth Dec., 1919— EXPERIMENT AT CARLISLE. A CONSPICUOUS SUCCESS. LONDON, Ist December. The broad result of the Liquor Control Board's experiment in_ purchasing and transforming the Carlisle hotels into comfortable taverns and directly controlling the sale ol liquor is that it has practically wiped out drunkenness, without penalising the moderate drinker. Mr. Lloyd George favours the experiment, which he considers a conspicuous success. He only regrets that the scheme was not extended to other municipal towns in the more populated areas.
