TOWN-PLANNING
A deputation from the Greater Wellington Towu-plnunintr Association waited upon the Mayor yesterday afternoon in connection with varioim matters, of publio. welfare. Mr. A. Leigh , Hunt brie-fly outlined . the aims of t;he association, and expressed. its desire to cooperato with the council in making Wellington a more ■ attractive and more efficient .city. The council's housiiw scheme wns discussed, ,and Mr. Luke assured the deputation that he would do all in his power to see that any extensive scheme was carried out on modern town-planning lines.. In reply to a question regarding tram fares, .the Mayor said that until the council had a larger plant and more cars nothing could be dono in the way of reducing fares to lons-distance passengers. A suggestion was inado that vacant sections in the city."especially in ninm streets, might be converted into beauty and rest spots until the properties were sold; instead of allowing, them to remain idle and eyesores,. us is so frequently the case. Another suggestion'made bv the Town-planning Association was that the council might havo a contour map of the Town Belt prepared, so that the work of its development as a scenic and recreational , , reserve' might ■ }y> facilitated. Coui'tenay Place wns also discussed, and various proposed schemes 'for tho relief of congestion were mentioned. Other : mutters such as a new arterial road to provide additional access from one oud of the city to the other, the demnreatidn of the city plavgroiimls, and new reserves, wore brought up. The Mayor assured'the. association of his whole-hearted support, ami encouraged the citizens composing the organisation to keep on wilh the good work they wore doing.
