His .Excellency tho Governor-General, who left Wclliiißton last week on tho Government steamer Tutanelcai for a tour round tho South Island, will pay a. visit to tho" West Coast Sounds, and is ex■pected to arrive in Invereavgill next Friday (states our special correspondent). His Excelloncy will proceed to Queenstown on Saturday, spend tho week-end there, and leayo for Diinodin on Monday. Mr. Hugh Frederick Pike, one of tho oldest servants of tho Gear Meat Company, died in tho hospital 'ye3terday morning. Mr. Pike had Ixwi in the employ of the company since 1885, and ho has served in various clerical capacities in Potone ami Wellington, of Into years in tho Lnmbton Quav shop. Ho was born in Taimton. Somersetshire, seventy years ago. He camo to NewZealand in 1577, and was for sonio years engaged in fanning pursuits in South Canterbury before joining the Gear Company. Ho was probably tho best known man in this city in tho retail meat trade. Ho was a, foundation member ,of tho Ulster Lodge of Preouiasons, Petonc.
Two of the most popular police sergeants in Wellington have :re\eived notice- of their transfer: Sergeant I. H. Mnlhieson is to go to Invereargill and Sergeant G. B. Edwards .to Hamilton.
The death occurred at his residence at Ngaio, on Thursday last, of Sir. John William Davis, who for many years was one of the best-known members of the staff of the Land and Survey Department. Tho late Air. Davis became Land Transfer Draughtsman in Wellington in 1887, and was unpointed Chief Draughtsman in the Wellington District Land Office in Slay, 190 S. In April of tho following j'«nr he was promoted to tho position of Chief Draughtsman in the Head Office of th" Land and Survey Department. He retired on superannuation, but returned to Government work during tho war period. Mr. Davis, who was a r<01) of tin .
