THE DEPARTMENT'S REPORT

STILL SATISFACTORY The monthly report of the Department of. .Hepatization covering especially the month of Sopteniber and incidentally tho whple.period of seven mouths since the Department has been established is now circulated. The number -of returned soldiers on the: Department's register now totals ■69,980.;' This includes -13,315 men who have returned to tho Dominion siiico tho beginning of tho year. Demobilisation cards are now held by the district repatriation officers as follow:—, "Auckland ■ 14,-136 Wellington ..... 17,882 -.■--, Canterbury 8,529 """'Ota'go' 7,946 48,793 figures include cards for some 5478 men who returned prior to 1919 and have inquired regarding assistance from the Department. Last month a report was prepared giving a resumo of tho operations of tho Department from the date of its inception up to August 20 (a period of six months), and tho steady progress shown during that period is being well maintained; ■-,/:. To. enable discharged soldiers to start In .business 1517 loans, totalling ,£313,721, lave been approved by tho Ministerial Board, and during the past month a record amount of ,£102,80G was actually paid to or on behalf of soldiers for furniture, tools, business, sustenance, training fees, subsidised wages, assistance to apprentices, etc. Tho total amount paid to date under theso headings is ,£379,908. During tho month a further 333 men started training for a now occupation, and the total number of men for whom training has been arranged is 2258. • Of this number 1893 are still in training, and the balance (305) have, with a few exceptions, finished their courses and have been placed in employment. , Unemployment iigurcs continue to bo yjry satisfactory. Over 1200 men have been placed in employment during tho month, bringing the total up to over 10,000. Notwithstanding tho fresh cases coming daily under our purview, the number of unemployed throughout the Dominion at present en the' register of the Department is only 351, a'reduction of 87 since tho date of our last report. Some 48, men required assistance, in the way of unemployment sustenance during the month, but only twelve were receive ing sustouance payments at the date of this report. • A further 1323 men sought financial assistance during the month to enable them to start in business, and for the purchase of furniture, tools of trade, etc , The sum of .£8442 haq, been repaid to jthe Department, in reduction of loans granted, and it is satisfactory to. be able to report that in the great majority of cases the mon are meeting their .obligations promptly. " ' .
