It is understood that the British Government's contract to purchase Australian meat Will not terminate until three months after the ratification of Peace. The Merchants' Association of Australasia unanimously passed the following resolution ■.—'That we object entirely to Government trading, which is. always costly and inefficient in comparison with private enterprise; the Australasian shipping services having been thoroughly efficient in the past, we are of opinion that the competition of Government steamers is undesirable." Mr. James Elder, who is returning by the Sonoma, is well satisfied with the results of his interviews with manufacturers regarding the establishment of hivtnesses in Australia. He is ' hopef uf. that pressure on the Board of Trade will induce the Ministry of Shipping to transfer further refrigerated steamers from the Argentine to the Australian trade.— Aus.-N.Z.
