His Excellency the Governor-General returned to Wellington from the South Island on Friday. Dr. A. W. Avi-rill, Anglican Bishop of Auckland, is to sail for England in February to attend the Lambeth conference, which is to be held in Juno next. Ho nill be accompanied by Mrs. Avcrill. Bishop Averill does not expect to return until the end'of the year, and during his absence Archdeacon G. MacMurrav will act us commissary. Dr. C. Julius, Bishop of Christchurch, and Dr. Sedgwick, Bishop of Waiapu, will also attend, the conference. Usually, tho conference is'held every seven years, but owing to the war tlie gathering that should haro taken place in 1918 was postponed.
A Press Association message stales that Mr. A. A. Adams, rector of the Grey District High ,School for thirtytwo years, has resigned owing to illhealth.
Many will regret, to learn that Mr. Charles Hill, senr,, of "Te Hiwi," Island Bay, is in a very low stale of health. He has been confined to his bed how for some, weeks, and for that reason could not attend the opening of the Ta Hiwi Bowling Club (whose green is located on part of his ground) on Saturday afternoon, when many regrets were expressed owing lo the veteran bowler's illness.
Mr. C. F. Turner, local manager for the Blackball Coal. Company, who has been on u visit to Sydney, relumed to Wellington on Saturday.
Mr. John Tait, head of the theatrical firm of ,T. and N.Tait, arrived from Sydney by the Maheno.
Mr. Victor Fitzherbert, who is a member of ihe Kinelio Polini Dramatic Company, is a member of tho well-known l'almerston North family.of that name.
Mr". W. I!. Cave, general manager of tlio Insurance Office of Australia, . Ltd. (tho 1.0.A.), Sydney, has arrived in Wollington for the. purpose of establishing his company throughout the Dominion. He is staying at the Midland Hotel.
Among the passengers who arrived from Australia by the Mahcno was Father I'. 11. Lynch, well known on both sides of the Tasnian Sen. He is paying a flying visit to .New Zealand before proceeding; to the Orient to take up a position in Malate, Manila, as Superior of the Redemptorist Fathers. Since 1898 Father Lynch has been at work in most of the big centres in the British Isles, the Dominion and Commonwealth, and lands adjacent to the China Sea. Among other interesting works in the North Pacific he gave a mission in Canton during war lime—when bullets were flying and discarded pigtails were sold in the open market. Before entering the Redemptorist Order Father Lynch was » priest of the diocese of Dunedin, and was for ninny years Administrator of St. Joseph's Cathedral, Dunedin. For some time suffer the death of Bishop Aloran he was editor of the "New Zealand Tablet." Father Lynch will b« the guest of the Kedemptorist Fathers of St. Gerard's, Oriental Bay, till to-day, when li£ leaves for the south to visil relations and friends. He will return to Australia in time to catch the Tango Mam towards the end of the- month.
