TRAGEDY AT PAHAUTANUI
MAJOR SWKETJSER KILLED BY .MOTOR-CAT!. '['lie Upper Hutt ',police yesterday received advice that a -Mr. Pearce of Paliautanui, had fojmd on the Gorge Road between Opper Hutt and Paihautamii an overturned motorcar with the dead ixnly of a man beneath it. When word reached Wellington, Sergeant Wade and a constable proceeded to the sceno of the accident,"mid found a man named Daniel J. Sweetzev lying fr.ee downwards beneath tlm ear, the sealing portion of wbioli was across the middle of back. The car was lying at the foot of a bank below a hairpin bend in tho road. Apparently 1 it had/failed to round the bend properly, and bad gone over tho side. Sweeper was quite dead when t'be police arrived. The deceased, if is understood, was recently demobilised' franl the forces, in which lie held the rank of major. During (lie war lie performed the duties of adjutant at Trentham, and wr.s a _ wellknown figure in tho camp. Ho is reported to have been in the motor business since his discharge. Ho was a married man with a family and he resided at Petone.
