THE ETHEL MYSTERY
-_ 0 A POSSJIHI! SOLUTION. A few days ago it was announced that Wave anxiety was being felt for the Safely of the "yacht Tithe! and her- owner, -Mr. Hill (a member of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club), who left for the Marlborough Sounds on .December -7, and is known to have cruised in the Queen Charlotte and Pelorus Sounds during January and February. Since Ihe THhel visited Port Underwood late in February last, yachtsmen have heard nothing' as to the wherealwuls of the yacht or her owner, Ihoujjh the club lias made exhaustive inquiries. In answer to. a paragraph in Tub Dominion' to the above effect, a Sir. Bramb.v, oil Mr. Gordon't; slation in lVilliscr Bay, has written to Mr. George M'Lean, secretary of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club, stating that in April a yacht arrived in tho hay with but a. single occupant. A. persistent southerly was blowing at the time, anil though the person in charge of the yacht tried for Jive days to get out of Hie liay. ihe'wealher proved too much for tliii little craft, and finally she was run ashore on a. sandy beach, where she still lies. The man stayed lor three days in the hay. and then left by conch io catch a train presumably for Wellington. The letter does not mention the name of the occupant of the yacht, but as single-handed cruising is not usual on our coasts, there is strong presumptive evidence that the yacht mentioned is the Ethel. If it in, . tho mystery is still veiled, as Mr. Hill hM not been seen by any of the local yachtsmen. Mr. M'loan has written to Air. Gordon for a fuller description both of (he man and the yacht, the answei 1 to which should help to clear up the Ethel mysljiry. Tn the meantime Hie club has been advised that the wreckage of a boat or yacht has been washed up on the beach iit Otaki. The local police eonstablo has been comnmnicalcd with by telephone by Mr. J. Duncan (president of tho club), villi the request that portions of tho wreckage be secured for the purposes of identification.
