By Telegraph—Press AesodaUou. !,■..■ j Whangarei, June i. j ■ Sensational evidence was given at an I ' inquest to-day concerning the deuth qf ; Jessie West, aged about 32, a- housei maid <it the Whangarei Hotel, " whoso : • dead body was found in the upper reaches of AVhangareiHarbuur last night. | " Pearl Burke, another housemaid in the I same hotel, testified that the tragedy j was the outcome of spiritualistic meetings held in deceased's room. After i . such a meeting on Tuesday night, at ' 8.30 witness and deceased walked to tho town- wharf, whero tho latter, remark- ; ing, "Freddy is calling me,'! disrobed • herself, and put on her nightdress. At deceased's request witness took her j clothes and walked away, though beirg ! ' fully aware of deceased's intention. A i ' verdict was returned that death was due ;'■• to drowning by deceased throwing herj solf into the water. The Coroner remarked that the girl liurke,, though apparently simpfc-minded, was morally responsible for West's death, if not liable under the criminal code.
