HOLIDAY RACING

THE OTAKI MEETING

VOLO SCORES IN THE CUP

LADY GENERAL WINS TAITUA HANDICAP

The Otaki Meeting opened in glorious weather and belore a record crowd. Thu special trains wero well patronised, and 6o great was the crowd ou the iUo a.m. tram that many had to stand ail tiio way. The racing was very good, and the finishes in all the events were remarkably close, The totalisator investments amounted to iIM.OJU, a record for the club. Tho favourites fared badly, and several, very hot orders were ueleated during the day. I'or the opening event the I'ordelltrained Festival was a good favourite, with Achilleon and Hautawa also in Uie market. Deacon went wrong while doing his preliminary and couid not start. Moutoa Boy was iirst away, but tho favourite soon ran up to lam. Rounding tho bend the latter hung badly, un'J Huutawa got through on tite rails. Tlic favourite was in front at the distance, but Kyoto, finishing well, beat him by a neck. Achilleon was a length away, and then came Hautawa.

Tiiri was the best backed in the Hack Flying Handicap, in which there tvero. numerous acratchings.. Tonnkohe was quickest to begin, but the favourite and Black Mark wore always huudy, and in ! the straight the favourite took charge, but over the last 50 yards his weight told, and Idle Talk, finishing well, beat him by a bare head. Black Mark was a length away, and Tonukohe fourth. Master Webster and Kurapai were evenly backed in the Steeplechase. Gang Atwi' and Gwynne made the early rim, ning, with the two favourites naudy. Gang Awa J and Master Webster wero in oharge a. mile from home, with the other pair several lengths away. Gwynno joined in at the last fence, but he lnaue a faulty leap, and in a close finish Gang Awa , beat Master Webster by a head. Gwynne was a length away. Kurapai bled and was pulled up, and Kingston Boy and Negative fell. Master Webster was disqualified for running off, and Gwynne was placed second. Dillamorc, rider of Master Webster, was fined A 5 for continuing on in the race. The Eaukawa Cup was a good race for speculators. Volo wae ridden by an apprentice and went out of favour. Marqueteur, with Bagby in the saddle, was the public choice, but Nobleman and Volo were well backed. The last-named and Detroit were badly away. Nobleman and Rose Pink led past the stand from a bunched field, but passing the six furlongs Volo shot out and put a break on the field, while Battle Song and Elooution took second place. Entering the straight Volo had a twolengths' advani/ige, (but Battle 'Song, Pacific Slope, and Marqueteur all threw out vigorous challenges, and in a great race to the post Volo won by a head from Battle Song, with Pacific Slopo a neck away, and Marqueteur fourth. A section of the orowd was inclined to dispute the judge's placing, many thinking that Battle Song ha.d won. A very hot order in Pretty Bobby was defeated in the Otaki Hack Handicap. White Ranger set a very fast pace, ami at one stage held a ten-lengths' lead. The favourite ran to him first, but in the straight his weight told, and he was beaten by Momao after a great finish. Transmission was a neck away, aud Uonsultation was right up in fourth place. The honours of the race were with the top weight, as he was conceding the winner 161b. Torfreda closed up a short-priced favourite for tho Taipua Handicap, but after having every chance to «-in she shut up badly in the straight, and was beaten out of a place. Half a furlong from home Astinome and Play Off were fighting it out. but lady General finished with a great rattle, and beat Astinome by a neck. Oratress was the same distance away in third place. Potentiality finished fourth. The start was nut a good one, and several of the horses had no chance from the rise of the barrier.
