He lighted two small smoi.eboxes, and when the fumes had filled the church ho drew two revolvers and fired indiscriminately at the congregation. Although nobody was struck a panio ensued, and tho congregation climbed through tho windows to a verandah roof. Tho lunatic leaned out of tho window and fired again, wounding two Chinamen and Miss Dyson, a European, who was conducting the service.: The noiso and sinoko caused an alarm of firo to bo given, and tho ongines, whioh came quickly on tho scone, wore niot with a fu'sillado of bullets, none of which took effect. Tho madman then bolted, pursued by the crowd, whom ho fired on. Ho then escaped up a lano, whoro ho barricaded himself in a house. ' Tho police and firemen, with n searchlight, occupied the neighbouring houses, and a battlo with revolvers was kept up from 8 o'clock last night. The Chinaman possessed a large quantity of ammunition. Altogether fifteen people • were wounded. Ten are in hospital, - three seriously injured. Tho lunatic is still holding tho besiegers at bay.—Press Assn.
Citadel Rushed, (Rocs. June 2, 8.5 p.m.) Sydney, Juno i. A tremendous crowd witnessed .tho last stages of tho Chineso siege. A civilian accompanying them shot the Chinaman through tho head, killing him. Tho two firemen who were shot mako tho total number of viotims sevonteon. most of them being slightly wounaed. Preparations had boen made to bomb tho maniac out, but the final rush pmdo this unnecessary.
