TRAMWAY TRAFFIC REGULATIONS
Sir,—l am interested by a local in your paper of tliis morning re the effect of the recent re-introduction of traffic regulations on the tramcnrs, and quite agree with the remarks. There is, howover, another person who might with profit he mentioned, and that is the overzealous "conductor hog." Speaking broadmindedly as one who has ridden in the cars regularly for seven or eight years, there is a large section of tne publio who give little trouble, and aro as anxious to ride home in comfort as tho tramway employees are to obtain what thoy consider decent working conditions. But in matters of this kind thero should be a good deal of give-and-take in ac-; cordnnce with the times by all concerned.
I live "through the tunnel," and until recently I liavo not been able to get home to lunch, and in consequence am anxious to do so, but it takes every minute of the hour to do it. A car bound for Hataitai during a recent lunch hour reached Kolburn Avenue stop moderately filled, and with threo people on the centre platform. Half ft dozen passengers wished to board tho car at that stop, but were officiously rofused and left standing there. The whole lot could have been carried iu the car without oontraveniug the regulations or, inconveniencing the officials, but my friend aforementioned thought otherwise, and so it goes on. In common with others I have seen moro tramcnrs and traffic than 60iue of these -officials I mention could possiblv stretch their imagination to dream of, and yet always able to get "aboard;" but it is astonishing how one has lo come homo to this village of "mouldy methods" to learn something.-
In conclusion it must not be forgotten that some conductors know their business and their aotions are appreciated, but' I would suggest that the Tramway Union put their own house in order first if they want to get tho -whole-hearted support of the public, and their. efforts to obtain bettor conditions will receive a greater measure of reward.—l am, etc., ■ "HEDGEHOG."
