A RECORD ROLL
FOii THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. There will be a. record roll of electurs' l'or the municipal elections next montii. The chief .returning officer (Mr. .lames Ames) stated yesterday that the number on the main roll this year is 27,5!i0 as against the last main roll. (In the supplementary roll two years ago, there were VJo-ti names, Ijit that number will be greatly exceeded this year, as there aro already over 40(H) names enrolled, and this roll does not close until April I. in addition, 100, there will be added tho roll for Onslow Borough, which exceeded 15011 names two years ago, and is sure to be larger on the present'occasion. On a rough computation it is anticipated that-there will be approximately SI,OOO names on the completed roll this year. , ■ Mr. Ames' anticipates thai printed copies of the new main roll will be available on Tuesday next.
,There has been some comment in ilie City -Cowiicil- and elsewhere on the apparently loose manner in which the roll is compiled. That- is to say, that nrac-tit-ally anyone may obtain a, number «-f enrolment forms ai'j have them filled in. and registered without any prewutiori being takou to ascertain if the applications so handed in bear t'le names -jf people entitled to vote. It migu>:. m-i----ha|», allay any suspicion and check anv possible attempt at "dummyism" vj know that certain itiriuirics are beins discreetly made by cunncil employees lo ascertain if anything of tho sort is uoing on. The penalty for such malpractice. is a severe one, and, if deluded, no stone will be left unturned to call U account those responsible for such falsifying of the roll.
