A It-EFEKENCE AT THE UNIVERSIT? SENATE, i. By Teleßraph-Press Association. Christchurch, February 18. In his opening address to the University Senate at its annual meeting in Christchurch yesterday, the Chancellor (Sir Kobert Stout) referred to the placing of the German language as a Senior Scholarship subject. ' There had been a Krait falling oil iu the number of students studying the German language. During the past five years there had only been two candidates in German, and the number of candidates for French scholarships during the same period was: In 11)14, 9; in 1915, 5; 1910, 17; 1917, 12; 1918, ' 19. They must consider whether it wna wise to have only one scholarship for French when the study of German had so fallen off, and was not likely to revive without raising tho question of whether, considering the conduct of the Germans during the war, there should be any encouragement given to the study of their language or literature. The Senate ought to consider, tho number of students , who desired to take the subject. From that point of view it appeared that they ought to provide for two scholarships in English and two in French. From n. literary point of view, French was much more important than German. If they wanted their students to acquira style and literary grace, and be logical in their. writing they would not advise them to 6tudy German, but they would urge them to study French as a modern language that would greatly assist them,
