EVIDENCE IN CHRISTCHURCH. By Telegraph.—frees ARsociation. Christchurch, February 15. Beforo the Industries Committee today, C. H. Gilby urged the Government to fomi on Inventions Board, which would protect patented inventions, in a similar way to that adopted by the United States. Charles J. Morrison asked for a protective tariff on printing ink, similar to that in Australia, but said it would not be wise to tee black newspaper ink made dutiable. It would not, if a tariff were granted, raise prices, but it would enable manufacturers to maintain the present prices. Tho introduction of <i tariff in Australia had enabled at least two new firms to go into business.
D. L. Dodd, on behalf of Hutchinson's scales, said that his firm wero tho only scale manufacturers' in the Dominion. Tho expansion of the company's operations had been .severely hampered by keen competition from tho imported article. He asked for an increased tariff, and also wished the Government to abolish for public use all types, of spring scales.
G. AY. Skellery, on behalf of tho Para Rubber Company, said that for the past year there had been importations of car tyres to tho value of .£700,000, oycle tyres to the value of ,£60,000, and mechanical rubber goods to the value of ,£IOO,OOO. The want of a tariff on iinported rubber was hindering tho industry in the Dominion.
