RIFLE SHOOTING
WELLINGTON UNION'S JUNIOR SHIELD MATCH. The junior shield match of- the Wellington Rifle Club's Union was tired on Saturday afternoon, when.four teams representing ' the Petone, Karori, Suburbs, and Old Navals' Rifle Clubs competed. Although the weather was fine throughout, there/was just sufficient variation in the light northerly braze to keep competitors on the alert for the unwelcome "magpie," and there were perhaps as many of these registered on the day as there were of bull's-eyes. Tha match resulted in a win- for the Karon' Ride Club, which Lad .succeeded'in'winning the senior shield the previous, week. This is the first occasion on which iboth the •senior and junior shields have won by the same club. Conimsncing at the 309 yards' range, the Petone team quickly set the main, and finished the distance with a lead of 5 points over the 'Karori''and Suburbs teams. Tho Karori team made the steadiest shooting at .500 yards, and passed Petone's score by" 7 points on the two ranges. Suburbs in'the meantime had made up the margin on the Petone team's< first, range score, nnd again two teams were tiding for second place. With tho hardest distance still to go, the chances were good for any of these three teams, and even when each team had only one man left to lire at (JOO yards the result was still in doubt, the Petone team having drawn up to within 3- points of the Karori team. The Karori .team, however, were fortunate in having in Rifleman W. Skegg a strong finisher, who wound up his score with thr?e bull'seyes, and, with a range score of 31, advanced his team's lead by a further 9 points. The Petono Clwb, which had been beaten for second place in the senior shield match by one point from the Suburbs Club, avenged its defeat by. heading the latter club by 2 points in the junior match. The Old Navals' Club, though not .nearly 60 strong in point of numbers as the other local clubs; lacks nothing in enthusiasm, and will without doubt have a better say in these matches in the future. i ' The union's trophy for Ihe highest individual score in Saturday's match was. won by Rifleman W. Skegg, of the Karori Club. The duties of range officer were again most capably performed by Mr. H. Hawthorn, while Mr. W. Cowan's work as trench officer added. materially to the success of the competition. Detailed scores:— Karori Rifle Club. 300 500 600 yds. yds. yds. Tl. W. Skegg 29 30 31 '90 G. Jones 27 25 29 81 E.
