WOMEN POLICE

A distinctive war-time development iu English industry has been the ...estate lishment of women police forces in factories where women are employed. They have multifarious duties,' and perform them very effectively.

The women police began their career in the summer 0f'1916, when it became evident that further measures were needed for tho supervision of women in munitions work than had. been adopted up : to that time.

Tho women police examine passports, check the workers as they enter the factories, search for such contraband articles as matches, cigarettes, end alcohol, patrol the factory neighbourhood, and assist the police court Magistrates.

The patrol is a highly important, feature of their service, for any of thes plants are located in lonely spots, practically all of them are going full blast night and day. Even within the factory enclosures the policewomen are needed, for these are in some instancos six miles long, and women making explosives must often work in isolated huts at long distances from other structures. So valuable has tho, work of the policewomen proved that their retention in industry after tho war, so long as conditions necessitate the employment of women under present conditions or conditions approximately similar, is fully expected.
