EQUAL SUFFRAGE DEFEATED IN' AMERICAN SENATE. (Rec. February 16, 5.5 p.m.) Vancouver, February 13. By a margin of one vote a motion to grant equal-suffrage was defeated in the Senate at Washington.—Reuter.

THE RED CROSS IN WAR TIME BIG SUMS HANDLED. (Rec.. February 15, 5.5 p.m.) London, February 14. The Red Cross from May, 1916, to November 30 received an income of £169,579. The expenditure totalled .£122,724, including salaries and administration £3427, field stall' salaries and allowances .£8417, free comforts £31,299. The ballance-sheet shows assets representing £82,658, including canteen stock £52,272, and unredeemed New Zealand coupons .£23,088; but the outstanding liabilities on account of trading total £20,928. The bank overdraft is £13,873, and the net profit on trading operations - was ■ £15,214, which, added to the free comforts fund for dug-outs, trenches, and base.camps, make the latter £46,505.— Aus.-N.Z.
