FISHERIES COMMISSION

POINTS FOR CONSIDERATION;

Arrangements have been made by the Northern Fishermen's Union for the. presentation of their case to the commission which hat been appointed to sit in Auckland. Mr. 15. C. Cutten, S.M., )'■ to preside, and will take evidence al Auckland, Thames, and Helensville, 1 is expected the commission will last from l+.to 18 days. : The objects of the Fishermen's Union are twofold. One is to draw attention to the price paid to the men for <-'" fish, nnd compare it with the cost of this articlo of diet to the consumer. The second question is claimed to ho one ' great importance to line fishermen, namely, the fixing of limits, within which the trawlers may not operate. Rightly or wrongly, the line fisermen claim that trawling within certain near limits interferes with the beds of the fish. On tho other hand, the trawlers are anxious to have' more definite points fixed t the limits. The present limits are Matnkana to Tiri Tiri, and thence duo- en?' to Cabbage Bay. The trawlers suggest that more definite points wou'd be from Okura River to Wneheko Island, and thence a lino across to Cnstle Hill, Coromtindel. This is objected to by the line fishermen some 2fi(> o'f whom are dependent for their livimr upon fishing in the T-T.im-.'iki Gulf. They claim 'Hint'the lighting of Flat Rock, off I\*awnu, makes the existing limits v«y definite, namely, Rodney Point to Flat Rock, and thence in a line to the Cape Colvillc. •
